When WordPress 5.0 was released, the Classic Editor was replaced with a new editor called the Gutenberg Block Editor. In the past, you would need to know HTML and CSS coding or install a WordPress plugin to make layout changes to your post content. Now with Gutenberg, you can create post content that is more complex. This tutorial explains how to create a blog post and add common content elements using blocks.

How to Create a Blog Post

Step 1: On the WordPress Dashboard, go to Posts.

Step 2: Click Add New.

Step 3: A new blank post editing page will appear.

WordPress uses blocks to make editing your post content quick and easy. Simply click on the block that says Add title and type you custom post title. To begin adding your post content, click on the next block and begin typing.

As you write paragraph text, you can press Enter to automatically create a new block. If you want to keep your text in one block, press Shift + Enter.

How to Add a New Block

Look for the plus icon with a circle to create a new block. It is located at the top of the post editor and will appear if you hover your mouse over the top of an existing block. As you are typing text, you can also press Enter to create a new block. When you click on the plus icon on the left of the new block, you can select the settings for the block.

There are several different types of blocks. The most common are shown below. If you click the up arrow to the right of Most Used, you’ll see the entire list of block options.

How to Add an Image Block

Step 1: Create a new block by pressing Enter or using the plus icon.

Step 2: Select the image icon from the block options window. In most cases, it will be listed under Most Used. You can also search for the term image.

Step 3: You can select an image from your computer or use an image you’ve already uploaded to your Media Library.

TIP! To reduce your image size so your images load faster, you can use a site called TinyJPG.com. If you have many photos, you may want to consider a WordPress plugin called ShortPixel Image Optimizer.

Step 3: Create your preferred alt tag and title for the image. Click Select to add your photo to the blog post.

What is an alt tag?

When you add an image, you will see a section on the right called Attachment Details. Every single image you add to your posts should have alt text and a title. When visitors have turned off images on their web browser or if they are using a screen reader due to visual impairment, the alt tag is used. An alt tag should include the SEO keyphrase that describes the image.

Step 4: After you have selected your image and added it to your post, you can click on it to align it on the left, center, or right of the blog post.

How to Move Blocks

Click on the block you would like to move. Use the up or down arrows that appear on the left side of the block to move the block. You can also click on two rows of dots that appear between the arrows and drag the block.

Change Post Settings

When viewing your post in the editor, you will see settings on the right side.

Step 1: Choose a Category.

Every post that you publish will need to be organized into a category. (Example: Recipes) A category should be a broad topic. If you do not pick a category, your post will be displayed under Uncategorized.

Step 2: Choose Tags.

Tags are a way to sort the posts of a category using more specific information. (Example: A category called Recipes with Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner as the tags.) Tags are optional.

Step 3: Choose a Featured Image.

WordPress themes may display the featured image in a different location, but for Genesis Framework themes (including those designed by Albemarle PR), the featured post image will appear in these locations:

Genesis – Featured Posts Widget

The featured image will be displayed with the post excerpt wherever the Genesis – Featured Post Widget is installed. This example shows the widget displayed on the sidebar.

Blog Category Archives

When you view the posts organized into a specific category or the search results page, the featured image will be displayed next to your post content.

Step 4: Write a short excerpt of your post that explains a summary of your post.

Step 5: If you want to turn blog comments on/off for a specific post, you can choose this option under the Discussion setting.

How to Publish a Post

When viewing your post in the editor, you will see settings on the right side.

Step 1: You can publish your post immediately by clicking the Publish button. If you would like to schedule a post to be published in the future, click the immediately link and select the day and time on the calendar.

TIP: You may need to change your time zone to make sure your posts are published at the correct time.

Dashboard > Settings > General > Timezone

If you are not ready to publish the post, you can click Save Draft to come back to it later.
